Countrywide breach
September 13, 2008
Why hasn't this received more news? Are we so conditioned now to these security breaches that no one blinks an eye? I just received a letter from Countrywide (my mortgage company), that they "became aware that a Countrywide employee (now fomer) may have sold unauthorized personal information about you to a third party...that included your name, address, Social Security number, mortgage loan number, etc." I applaud Countrywide for their efforts in bringing this to my attention, but I'm surprised that this has not received more attention from the media. And I suppose Countrywide has bigger problems in light of the number of foreclosures that is plaguing the nation. Whenever I receive correspondence from Countrywide, I almost always file it in "file 13" or trash it, as I receive countless offers (along with other mortgage companies) to refinance, etc. Not to mention the tons of spam that come through my email. Luckily, I did not throw away this last letter. However, they are offering a complimentary credit monitoring service for 2 years in light of this security breach. In case you did throw away the letter, the website to take advantage of this offer is: http://www.consumerinfo.com/countrywide Thank you
